The order that avoids trouble
A safe move goes like this:
- Take a full backup of the files and the database
- Copy them to the new host and test on a temporary address
- Check forms, logins, images and payments on the copy
- Lower the DNS timer a day or two before, so the switch spreads quickly
- Switch the domain to the new host at a quiet time
- Keep the old host running for a while, until everything is confirmed
The email trap
If your email lives on the old host and you switch the domain without moving it, mail stops arriving. List every mailbox before you start, and either move it or keep the mail records pointing to where it lives now.
