Website Backups and Monitoring: What You Actually Need
A website can be lost to a failed update, a hacked login or a hosting fault. Backups let you get it back. Monitoring tells you something is wrong before your customers do.
Our hosting includes daily backups and 24/7 monitoring. This guide is what to look for in any host.

What a good backup looks like
Check these:
- It covers both the files and the database
- It runs every day, or more often for a busy shop
- Copies are kept away from the same server
- Several days or weeks are kept, not only the latest
- Someone has actually restored one, to prove it works
What monitoring should watch
At minimum, whether the site answers, and an alert to a person if it does not. Better monitoring also watches how fast pages load, when your security certificate expires, and when your domain registration runs out. The last two cause outages that are entirely avoidable.
Who is responsible
Ask your host in plain words: who takes the backup, where it is kept and how fast you get a restore. If the answer is "you", set up your own. A backup nobody owns is the one that does not exist when you need it.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a site be backed up?
Daily suits most business sites. A shop that takes orders all day may need more often. We say what fits when we know how your site changes.
Do I need a backup if my host has one?
Ask how long it is kept and whether you can restore it yourself. Many people also keep their own copy of anything important.
Can you set this up for my site?
Yes. Tell us where the site is hosted and what it is built with.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the size of the site and the hosting. We quote in writing after a short call.
Not sure your site is protected?
