Vulnerability Assessment vs Penetration Testing: What Is the Difference?

The two terms are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. One is a wide check for known weaknesses, and the other is an attempt to get in, the way an attacker would.

That is why you see them written together as VAPT. Here is what each does, and which one you need first.

Vulnerability assessment: a wide check

A vulnerability assessment uses tools to scan your systems for known weaknesses, such as outdated software and missing settings. The result is a list, ranked by how serious each item is.

It is broad and relatively quick. It does not show whether a weakness can actually be used, or what an attacker could reach by combining several.

Penetration test: trying to get in

A penetration test goes further. A person tries to use the weaknesses, link them together and reach data or controls they should not. It shows real impact, and it finds problems in how an application is designed, which scanners cannot see.

It is narrower and takes more time, because it is done by hand.

Which one do you need?

A rough guide:

  • Many systems and little time: start with a vulnerability assessment
  • One important application with logins and customer data: a penetration test
  • A customer or auditor has asked for a specific one: ask them which, and check our report fits
  • Not sure: tell us what you run, and we suggest a scope

Frequently asked questions

Is a scan enough?

A scan is a good start for finding known weaknesses. It does not tell you what an attacker could do with them, so important applications need a manual test as well.

How often should we test?

At least after major changes, and on a regular schedule for important systems. We can suggest one when we know what you run.

Do you offer vulnerability assessment services and penetration testing?

Yes, both. We scope the work to what you run and what your customers ask for.

How much does each cost?

It depends on the scope. We quote in writing after a short call.

Not sure which you need?

Tell us what you run and who asked for the test. Call +91-86194 70448 or email contact@gtsltd.in. We work remotely, in English, with businesses in India and abroad.
