Is SEO Dead With AI? What Changes in AI Search and What Does Not
No. People still use search engines, and AI tools such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google's AI answers still take what they say from pages on the web. What has changed is that some people now read the answer and never click.
This guide explains what changes, what stays the same and a short checklist for being found by both search engines and AI assistants. Nobody can promise a place in an AI answer, and we do not.
Our main page for this service: SEO.
What has changed
Three things are different now:
- For some searches an AI answer sits at the top of the results, so fewer people click for simple questions
- People ask AI assistants longer, more specific questions and expect a direct answer
- AI answers often name or link the pages they drew on, so being a clear and trusted source matters more
What has not changed
AI search tools still need pages to read. A site that cannot be crawled, loads slowly or says nothing useful will be passed over by both search engines and AI tools. The basics still decide most of the result:
- Pages that search engines and AI crawlers are allowed to read
- Clear titles, headings and text that answer a real question
- A fast site that works well on a phone
- Links and mentions from other trusted sites
- Facts that are correct and the same everywhere your business appears
A checklist for AI assistants
This work is often called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). In practice it is good SEO with a few extra checks:
- Check robots.txt. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude answers, allow their search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot
- Google's AI answers draw on the same index as normal search, so a page that Googlebot cannot read cannot appear in them either
- Make sure the full text is in the page itself, not added later by JavaScript, because some crawlers do not run scripts
- Put a short, plain answer near the top of the page, then explain
- Add a FAQ with the real questions your customers ask, and mark it up with structured data
- Keep your name, address, services and contact details the same on your site, your Google Business Profile and your listings
- Keep pages up to date, and show who wrote them and when they last changed
What is unproven
Be wary of anyone who promises a place in ChatGPT or Google AI answers. Nobody controls those answers.
A file called llms.txt is sometimes suggested as a way to point AI tools at your best pages. It is an informal proposal, not an official standard, and there is no solid proof yet that it changes what AI tools show. It costs little to add, so treat it as a small extra, not a strategy.
What we did on our own site
On our own site, the full text of every page is in the page itself, the AI search crawlers named above are allowed in robots.txt, there is an llms.txt file, and pages that answer questions carry FAQ markup. That is groundwork. We cannot say it puts us in any AI answer, and we are not promising it will put you in one.
How this fits with SEO work
Our SEO work starts with a written audit of what search engines can and cannot read on your site, then a plan that matches keywords to pages. Nobody can honestly promise a first-page position, and we do not.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No. AI answers still come from web pages, and people still use search engines every day. The emphasis has shifted: clear answers, trusted sources and correct facts matter more.
Can ChatGPT do SEO?
It can help with ideas, outlines and first drafts of titles and descriptions. It cannot check how your site is crawled, fix technical problems, earn links or know your customers. Use it as an assistant, with a person checking the work.
What is generative engine optimization?
It means making your content easy for AI tools to find, understand and quote, so you can appear in their answers as well as in search results. It builds on normal SEO. Nobody can guarantee being included.
What is replacing SEO?
Nothing has replaced it. AI search is an addition. The same work supports both: useful pages, a fast site and mentions from trusted sites.
How long does SEO take?
Expect months rather than weeks. Impressions usually show up before clicks, and a monthly report shows the direction.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It is your choice. Crawlers that power AI search can send visitors, so many businesses allow them. Other crawlers collect training data and send no visitors. Blocking those does not affect Google Search.
Can you help us appear in AI answers?
We can check that AI crawlers can read your site, that your pages answer real questions and that your business details are consistent. We cannot promise a place in any AI answer.
